National Smile Day 2004
Laughter is the best medicine

April Fools Day 2004 was our inaugural National Smile Day, giving Australia an excuse to smile for the day and raise funds for Clown Doctors.

Lisa Chappel

Celebrity ambassadors supported the day. Scott Cam, from Channel 9’s Backyard Blitz and Renovation Rescue took time out from his hectic schedule to raise funds. Home and Away star Isabel Lucas and Lisa Chappel, Clare in McLeod’s Daughters, hilarious star of radio and television, Mikey Robins, and the Sydney Swans all helped to raise smiles.

Corporations backed the campaign. Cadbury-Schweppes is Principal Partner for National Smile Day. In addition they helped ‘Turn a Frown Upside Down’ and raised $50 000 from the sale of selected products in Woolworths. The Commonwealth Bank accepted donations at every branch.  The bank staff have been major supporters of Clown Doctors since 1999.  Clown Doctor pens were available at Woolworths and Safeways supermarkets.

The community got behind the day with FUN-raising events. Luna Park in Sydney re-opened with Bandage – Comedy for Clown Doctors hosted by Wendy Harmer in the just completed Big Top. Clown Doctors were on hand to collect a voluntary ‘smile tax’ at Brisbane Airport. John Colet School in Sydney, with only 120 students, raised $800.  Indoor play centre Clown Town in Sydney hosted a day of fun for children and their parents.

The fun on April 1 included lunch at Zinc in Federation Square in Melbourne with Anthony Ackroyd providing the laughs. Prue McSween and John Stanley were Masters of Ceremonies at the National Smile Day cocktail party at Waters Edge in Melbourne.
